If you need to do a basic homemade DIY or have spent time
working on wheels or motors, you will be familiar with the methods used to
fasten nuts, washers and bolts. Also, if this bolt is attached to a vibrating
object, the nuts and washers will loosen. This is where the lock nut and lock
washer come in. This small and powerful component is designed to hold the head
of the threaded bolt and prevent the vibration from loosening.
Lock Nut:-
The lock-nut
is a unique device that can withstand loosening when properly adjusted in a
bolt. Typical torque lock nut: it is related to the amount of torque required
to adjust the nut. And surface bearing lock nuts: free-rotating nuts that must
be pressed against the bearing surface to activate the locking mechanism.
Follow these steps to use the lock-nut correctly.
- As with the common nuts, the lock-nut is pressed against the threaded end of the bolt, with the protruding side facing out, so that a flat surface touches the work surface after tightening.
- Tighten the lock-nut until your hand is tight, then use a torque wrench to tighten the lock-nut until you reach the correct level of tightening.
Lock Washers:-
Lock washers are used to hold nuts and bolts in place to
prevent them from turning, slipping or loosening. There are several lock
washers, each designed for a specific application, but the basic purpose is
always the same to keep the nuts and bolts safe. Safety washers are made of a
variety of materials and have been used in a variety of applications, from
rail, marine and automotive machinery to basic household items. To use the
safety washer correctly, perform the following steps.
· Place the lock washer between the nut or head of the fastener and its work surface.
· Make sure that the teeth of the lock washer are fully engaged with the surface between them. This is essential. If the teeth are not properly engaged, they will not remain. If you use split washers without teeth, ignore this step.
· Use a manual and torque wrench to tighten the nut or bolt to the specified torque.
